EASTERN WHITE PINE (Pinus strobus)

aka Weymouth pine

“The Prep School Pine”

The eastern white pine will be the first to let you know that he’s from New England: “Maine, in particular. You can even find me on the state flag. My family has a lot of influence there.” The eastern white pine’s nose may be high up in the air, but that’s not without justification: this tree is constantly in demand for lumber, and rumor has it that he’s been recruited to play for Bowdoin’s basketball team due to his height.

In the Bleachers: Stick straight, with upward-blown branches styled by the wind itself. (But one can be skeptical of this “I-just-rolled-out-of-bed-this-handsome” look—is he trying to hide a receding crown-line?)

Hold Me: As he’s sure to let you know, needles come five to a bundle (“as it should be” . . . uh, gee whiz, dude), while his pine cones are 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 cm), delicate, thin, and white-tipped (manicured?).

Stadium Habitat: Well, you can usually find eastern white pine in the first row of the bleachers, at around 1,000 feet (305 m), hanging with pals red spruce and balsam fir while sipping a Tom Collins in a water bottle, but lately he’s been playing with the idea of a career in politics, and for that reason he’ll occasionally creep up to 5,000 feet (1,524 m) to glad-hand some Appalachian Mountain trees.
